An economical solution for railing around the stairwell is a 42 inch low wall made of drywall. It serves as a barrier to below and can be trimmed with a rail cap. Great for areas where furniture will be placed behind. See examples below;

Coffer ceilings come in many shapes, sizes and have a wide variety
of features from panel trim, crown moulding, recessed and/or rope
lighting effects.
